This Chicago born native is putting a new spin on hip hop. Jelani Lateef also known as J Fury has been in the music game for over 12 years. Lateef is not only a rapper but he is a producer and CEO as well.
In 2011, Lateef started Manhood Entertainment, a production company. Lateef wanted to create a brand that showed men handling their responsibilities. Lateef’s musical style is much like his production company. His lyrics don’t bash women or glamourize illegal activity. Instead his lyrics are thought provoking images of his life. Lateef is a breath of fresh air for those who feel rap music cannot be positive. Lateef has put out several projects during his years in music. He started out with mixtapes, and in 2011, Lateef released an album entitled, “My Soul To Keep”. That album was followed up in 2014 by his second album entitled, “My Soul To Keep 2”.
On April 30th 2015, Lateef released a third album entitled, “Cold Days and Dark Nights”. Unlike Lateef’s first two albums which focused on overcoming obstacles, “Cold Days and Dark Nights” focuses more on subjects that occur in everyday life. For example, in Lateef’s song “The Lyrical” he talks about how much hip hop has changed throughout the years. You can check out the video for yourself below.
